Both.  You won't see a whole buffer being flooded with some color
bleeding out of an unfinished construct (unless related to $ math
toggles).  And this will have a positive effect on fontification
times.  This also means the problem of Emacs becoming sluggish due to
such misfontifications will not happen anymore.
