Huh? Why would preview be different to debug than other things?

Because Emacs is as stupid as Perl and does not understand so simple
things as in

        sh -x ./shell-script

Huh? What has this argument to do with preview?

I tried mention how easy it can be to debug a shell script: one little switch makes such a big difference! That's efficient.

  Anyway, use the debug-on-entry

Which entry, i.e. which variable(s) should I use?

or edebug-defun commands for setting up debugging of functions.

I forgot to send the contents of the *mail* buffer:

Emacs : GNU Emacs 23.0.60.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin8.11.0, *Step 9.0rc3)
 of 2007-12-18 on Latsche.local
Package: 11.84

current state:
==============
(setq
 AUCTeX-date "2007-01-12"
 window-system 'ns
 LaTeX-version "2e"
TeX-style-path '("style" "auto" "/Users/pete/Library/texmf/tex/ style"
                  "/Users/pete/Library/texmf/tex/auto"
                  "/Library/Application Support/Emacs/auctex/style" "/tmp")

/tmp? Is that a good idea?

This isn't my intention. Can it be that the configure script is faulty? There I used:

./configure --with-lispdir=/Library/Application Support/Emacs --with- emacs=/usr/local/bin/emacs-22.0.93 --with-auto-dir=/tmp --with-texmf- dir=/usr/local/gwTeX/texmf.pkgs --with-doc-dir=/usr/local/gwTeX/ texmf.pkgs

and I still get these auto directory pest wherever I use AUCTeX ...

 TeX-auto-save t
 TeX-parse-self t
 TeX-master "~/Quellen/auctex-11.84/preview/_region_"

This setting of TeX-master seems utterly wrong.

It's definitely not my work. I have nowhere such a setting. A former politician's and an honest man's word of honour!

Except for the variable window-system's value it is the same
environment as for the X client GNU Emacs 23.0.60.

Well, not having a Mac, I can't help out.
