Now I see that the problem cannot be solved.

But here I want to express my complain for the fact that plain TeX is always
neglected compared to LaTeX.  I don't find that right.  After all, D. Knuth has
written plain TeX and not LaTeX.  Plain TeX users are helpless with their
problems.  I wish I had the skills to fix them myself but unfortunately
haven't, but expert people should not in my opinion create facilities only and
only for LaTeX, which is a mere sun of plain TeX.  I understand that this
happens because so many people use LaTeX and so few people use plain TeX, but
this reason is not sufficient IMHO.
