I tried to compile gs7.00 too, on my Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r2, with
gcc-2.95.4, and the last libpng, jpeglib and zlib. I got strictly the
same. Then I tried to downgrade the source of ghostscript to 6.51, ran
"make" again, and got the same result.
I post this because I see nobody answered to help you. We have the same
problems, I'll keep you informed about what I tried and the results. If
you do the same, it may be working faster. Wanna try ?
