time and otim are valid commands from xboard to GNU Chess, what was the
problem this resulted in?

There were various issues with the thread handling in 5.06.

The tarball at;

http://www.wretched.demon.co.uk/R507

will form the 5.07 release, try it if 5.06 version is causing problems
related to threading.

Also useful to know what OS you are using, mostly so we can berate you
to install thread patches if it is an old version of Solaris ;-)
