'ls' not found when listing disrectory

configured using `configure  --mandir=/usr/man --infodir=/usr/info
--prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib --sharedstatedir=/var --with-gcc
--with-pop --with-x-toolkit i386-redhat-linux-gnu'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

when searching a file by C-x C-f a directory, the listing do not
apprears. the Scratch window indicate that
ls is not found (succes, ls). I am working on a Red Hat OS with Emacs
pre-installed.
