hexl-find-file and moding

This bug report will be sent to the Free Software Foundation,
not to your local site managers!
Please write in English, because the Emacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.

Your bug report will be posted to the bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org mailing list,
and to the gnu.emacs.bug news group.

In GNU Emacs 21.1.1 (i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Create a file, called ALPHABET, containing the seven characters "abcdef",
(almost any file would proably do)

Start Emacs

Open a file in hexl-mode
    M-x hexl-find-file <RET> ALPHABET <RET>

On the assumption that the file has changed, try to refresh it
    C-x C-f <RET>

to which emacs says
    Revisit non-literally? (y or n)

and we answer
            y

The file now claims to be in hexl-mode, but is desplayed as straight text.

Change to fundamental mode
    M-x fundamental-mode <RET>

to which emacs says
Convert contents back to binary format? (y or n)

and we answer
        y

The entire contents of the buffer ALPHABET are deleted.
I feel sure this is the wrong.

It clearly isn't a top priority bug, but I hope it is an easy fix.

I have reported hexl- bugs before, and have been sent replacement hexl.el
files. (Thanks). I think I am at the moment using an original hexl.el from
emacs-21.1.1.

Regards,
   John
