This may actually very well be caused by Lilypond if you
did some typing error in the input file. If you're new
to Lilypond, I'd recommend that you first try one of the
example files included in the distribution. If you
take them from the WWW page (follow the links for
short or longer examples), you can also view the expected
output and compare to what you get. However, watch out
that you use the same Lilypond version as the one on the
web page, otherwise the examples may not work.
Also, as I've said before, always use ly2dvi. Running
plain Lilypond is only relevant if you have some special
needs. If the tutorial tells you to try plain Lilypond first,
we should change the tutorial.
If you still have problems, please send us a copy of the
input file you are using.
