Hello.

 

I use tar to make backups of our server. We want to know how much data is in the backup so we use the switch --totals.

The output is written to stderr. Why is it not written to stdout, because it is not an error, is it?

 

I know that it would not be the problem to change it, but I would like to know why you print it on stderr.
