GNU as and stabs

My as (version 2.9.5) does strange things, when I assemble with the
--gstabs option:

foo.s: Assembler messages:
foo.s:1: Error: local label "0" (instance number 0 of a dollar label) is
not defined

The file was just a 'movl %eax,%ebx'. This also happens with an empty
file (!). Without stabs, however, everything seems fine...
BTW, the error message always mentions the last line of the file.
