Sorry about that. I am running Debian's binutils package version
2.12.90.0.1-4 on GNU/Linux. ld --version reports the following:
# ld --version
GNU ld version 2.12.90.0.1 20020307 Debian/GNU Linux

I have since upgraded to version 2.13.90.0.10-1 which appears to fix
this problem.
