in case you want to avoid recompiling the glibc, you could just
get a copy of reg*.[ch] sources from lglibc/posix subdirectory
(preferably from the cvs), and you can ./configure sed
--with-included-regex, after replacing the old included sources
by the new ones.
That way you are sure you are using the most recent regex code.
I think that such debug informations would be most valuable.
Feel free to ask me, if my instructions are too terse.
