Thanks for the patch and explanation. I have applied the patch to lang-php.
The patches to xgettext-php-1 and xgettext-php-2 should not be needed, since
PHP is not invoked here.

Ok, thanks. On the other hand I don't see any problem with applying them in xgettext-php-* too if that is the standard practice in php.
