The various logos suggested so far all seem good, but I think most of
them have a few problems which render them unsuitable for some purposes.
Some of the properties I think are useful for a logo are:

 - It should be available in vector as well as bitmap format, so that it
can be rendered at high quality at various resolutions (e.g. for
   printing).

 - It would be nice if it were clear from looking at the logo that it
is associated with backgammon. The obvious way seems to be to
include something like dice, chequers, or board points, but other
   ideas are probably possible.

 - It shouldn't be excessively complicated; it should be recognisable
even at icon size (down to 32x32, say.)

 - It shouldn't contain any text. Some of the times we want to use the
logo, we want a big "GNU Backgammon" nearby; other times we might
want smaller text; other times we won't want any text at all. It's
best if the text can be rendered independently of the logo.

 - It should be possible to render the logo with an alpha channel. There
are many circumstances where this is useful and looks better than a
   rectangular image.

In that spirit, I've tried to come up with a basic logo (by superimposing
the gnu from Canan Eti's logos over 6 board points). It is available in a
couple of sizes and formats from:

    ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/gnubg/logos/gnubg.eps
(example of the logo in vector format -- any other variation can be
       derived from this)
    ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/gnubg/logos/gnubg-big.png
      (example bitmap format)
    ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/gnubg/logos/gnubg-icon.png
(example of small size with alpha channel)

Does anybody have further logos, suggestions, comments, or modifications?

Cheers,
Gary.
