It also doesn't have a configure script.
If you copy one from the gtk+extra-0.99.17, you then find you need:

config.sub
config.guess
ltconfig
ltmain.sh
Makefile.in

etc.

Unless you are supposed to move the files over a 0.99.17 version, I'd
guess the gtkextra-2 stuff is not ready for building by
non-developers.

I notice the docs still say it requires gtk-1.2,

I idly tried copying the files over a gtk+extra 0.99.17 version,
deleting config.cache and doing a configure. That still looked like it
had found and wanted to use the gtk-1.2 include and library files,
even though I also have gtk-2.2 installed. Deleting Makefile.in led to
complaints that the Makefile.am was from an older version of automake,
but aclocal didn't like the aclocal.m4. All in all, this doesn't look
like a promising way to try to build it.

I guess for the moment I
will forgo whatever gtkextra is supposed to add to gnubg.
