The strange color (checkered) is caused by 'Opacity'.
Change the value of Opacity to .50 or higher ( move the slider to the
right)
Settaggi / Aspetto / Pedine(0 or 1) / Colore ....
Look for Opacity at the bottom of that window

The distortion....
I tried (almost) all settings. I can't reproduce it, not with the
'normal' gnubg, nor with the Italian language.

I propose this:
copy .gnubgautorc to 'whatever' (so you have a backup)
then run gnubg
delete the file .gnubgautorc
and now save the settings with gnubg
settaggi / salvi i settaggi
(this will create a new .gnubgautorc)

try again to play with Aspetto / Pedine
can you still reproduce the distorted checkers ??

if YES:
exit gnubg / delete .gnubgautorc / put back the copy you made earlier
if NO:
keep the new .gnubgautorc

Nardy
