It's probably not the only solution. Snowie support it's own extension
to the .mat format, where illegal moves or incomplete games can be set
up using a specialised string identical to the Snowie .txt position
files.
Unfortunately, gnubg can only import such .mat files, but not export
them.

Not "just". There are some headers that need to be stripped. I had some
correspondance with Olivier Egger regarding this earlier this year, and
he was willing to gives us the specs. He never replied on my last email;
I guess he was buzy with more important stuff :-( I'll write to him
again.
