Looking in a recent g++ manpage (g++ 3.3.3), I find:
gnu++98
The same as -std=c++98 plus GNU extensions. This is the
default for C++ code.
So, g++ follows the "embrace and extend" tactics. Depending on what
"GNU extensions" are, this can probably accept code that no other
standards-compliant compiler accepts...
