Hi,

If you are getting grub console just after the reboot it does not necessarily 
mean
grub.conf/menu.lst files are broken, but grub just does not point to them from
stage1 - correct me if I'm wrong.

If your grub.conf/menu.lst exists you can try this from the grub console:

grub> find /boot/grub/menu.lst
                  ==or ==
grub> find /boot/grub/grub.conf

... and if you get something like (hd?,?) after typing this command 
(where ? are numbers, e.g. hd(0,1) ) , the next thing you should try is

grub> configfile (hd0,1)/boot/grub/menu.lst
                        = or = 
grub>  configfile (hd0,1)/boot/grub/grub.conf

depending on which one of those files has been found. 
Once you do this you should see the grub boot menu again. 

Boot up your system and make sure to reinstall grub properly.

As Dan Farrell suggested, you must be in the grub prompt after a
(possibly unwanted) reboot, with a broken grub.conf ; the remedy is to
correct the grub.conf file, which usually lies in the /boot/grub
directory. To get out of here, you will now need a rescue disk, unless
you happen to know the partitioning of your hard drive(s).

So do you happen to know which hard drives you have and how they are
partitioned ? If yes, please write it there if you want the people to be
able to help you.
