Mortimer,

Unfortunately the tarball is doing the right thing according
to the gnu coding standards, but, it is unlikely to work by
default because Guile looks for its extensions in non-standard
directories, and those directories change for each major version

of Guile.


I'll try to make the INSTALL doc and the "configure" warnings
more clear.
