symbols broken in header

Several versions of this email have been stopped (for moderation) 
because of "Message has a suspicious header"

\flat and \sharp in the header (or \\flat and \\sharp) create a flat or
a sharp but do something nasty to the page dimensions or horizontal
spacing.  They also give the error below:
