Red Hat contributed it. They were supporting Linux-on-Sparc back then, IIRC.
No-one ever complained about lack of x86 support, so I didn't even
realize it was different until about a month ago, when I did some data
recovery for a friend.

I am totally ignorant about Novell. Have you got a Novell installation?
Does Parted recognize a partition table on it? What file system does it
use?
