I agree.
For one thing, it's so hard to find disk drives that have a working
write-protect jumper these days, that the software had damn well
better not write to the drive unless you really do ask it to. A user
command to "check" the disk should NEVER involve writing to it!!!
A user command to merely open the disk (e.g. to print the partition
table or the type of partition installed) should also NEVER write
to the disk.
