There are to ways to handle this. First, you can re-create the
archive on your Windows box using some more commonly understood format.
If you use GNU tar version 1.14 or later, use --format=ustar. If the
version of tar you are using is older than 1.14 (which is probably the
case under Windows), use -o option.
Secondly, you can install GNU tar on Solaris box and use it to unpack
the archive. As far as I know recent Sun distributions already include
it.
