Bote that only the portable 7 bit ASCII charset grants you that extraction
is possible anywhere.

This mailing list is a mailing list related to 'gtar' (GNU tar) in
contrary to e.g. 'star' ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/star/ or a dependency
of the UNIX tar http://cvs.opensolaris.org/source/xref/on/usr/src/cmd/tar/

If the incorrect error message is going away with a selfcompiled
version, then it verifies that the broken version uses a self made
but broken implementation of strerror().
