Just curious as to the answer to Jörg question below. And I'm wondering where I can get more information to read up on the different formats the --format option uses.
I just tested a restore of a file from tape that was written without the --format=pax option and the restore worked find (this file was not a tape spanned file) so I won't have to worry about compatibility with backups and restores as I implement the use of this option.

Try --format=pax, it does not have this limitation.Does this mean you introduced an incompatible alternative for multi-volume or did you reimplement the star method? Jörg
