Please see GNU tar documentation. The `--format' option is described
in the chapter 8, "Controlling the Archive Format". The infornation is
also available on line, see

  http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/html_chapter/tar_3.html#IDX71

for a description of the `--format' command line option, and

  http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/html_chapter/tar_8.html

for a description of various archive formats.

The meaning of "incompatible" is not entirely clear to me. The GNU tar
documentation states clearly that "multi-volume support is a GNU
extension and the archives created in this mode should be read only
using GNU `tar'" (see section 9.6.1 "Archives Longer than One Tape or
Disk", http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/html_section/tar_75.html).
However, multi-volume archives in pax format are readable and
extractable almost with any tar implementation, see
http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/html_node/tar_140.html for a
description.

Sergey
