I have just put up the first part of the software
into the cvs with the branch tag 'cdwrite'.
With this, you can try
'vcdimager --record --device=/dev/cdrom test.mpg'
with the hardware encoded files. Please tell me
about your success or any problems with this.
Next, I will put up my experimental input in a new
'-arnd' branch, hopefully before I am leaving for
my holidays on thursday. That probably won't work
for SVCD data without further changes, depending on
how far I come.
My latest idea about scanning the already recorded
tracks is to scan during recording and then leave
that information in a user data area at the end
of the mpeg track, maybe in XML format.
The current problem is that you have to scan at least
a part of the track to determine its parameters but
it would not be nice to have to scan 74 minutes
of video on a 4X speed recorder before finalizing.

PS to hvr: The stuff in the 'cdwrite' branch is
beta, just put it in main if you feel like it
(yes, I will add some documentation ;-).
