The problem is that it cannot know that. XBoard runs engines as
independent programs,
communicated with them through a 'pipe'. The only information it gets is
that the pipe
gets disconnected at the GNU-Chess end. So that is what it reports
('broken pipe').
Usually it means that the engine at the other end of the pipe died. (In
theory it could
also be that the engine still lives, but closed the pipe intentionally,
but that would be
an insane thing for an engine to do.)
