Found the problem. It was in Xnee - we're using a special behavior for
newer X. But the new X had such a hgh version number Xnee couldn't
handle it. Not good :(
It fixed in CVS (head).

A fix to get older version of gnee to work with newer X is to dynamically link
gnee to a newer version of libxnee. Just use LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to the
place where a fresh libxnee is.
I compiled the latest Xnee (cnee and libxnee) and did like this:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=libxnee/src/.libs/
gnee
... and gnee as shipped with Ubuntu works again.

Just did.
Termination with Ctrl-c works again, either with new cnee or with gnee with new
libxnee.
If you want to stop recording without pressing Ctrl-c bind a key (e.g "q") in
stop recording in the "Key bindings" pane in gnee.
