It was Xnee that was broken. In latest CVS I think it all should be working.

I tested it a bit and and it seems to be working.  Here's my command line:

    cnee --replay -f hesa.xns -mwm 327

This sets the number of move attempts to (you'll never be able to guess it!) 
327.
