I found this patch, which I made when I first encountered the problem but then
lost track of.

Assuming you have a gnulib clone on your hard-drive somewhere, there's no need
to download another copy, just run gnulib-tool from the lrex-gnu directory as
described in the blurb of the attached patch. (Besides I don't have a commit
bit for lrex, maybe Reuben can drop it in contrib/ or something?)
