I have one suggestion: order the list such that you do things first which make other things redundant. I have (just today) started requiring autotools to build some of my projects (this breaks ./configure && make, but "only slightly"). Once you do that, some of the few reasons I still use autotools in Lua projects, e.g. make distcheck, no longer apply. Another one was for tests, which doesn't apply to you. Maybe it's possible to use the luarocks build system? Or at least work towards it.
