Huh? When does the static initializer run and how do you determine if it
needs to run?

I agree, we are fortunate to have quite a few different (and sometimes
very different) VMs that use GNU Classpath. Like most people I'm self
centered ;-), but I expected others to speak up when I (or someone else)
suggests an "optimization" that really hurts them.
