bug in DDD 3.3.1?

I am trying to build DDD 3.3.1 from source and I keep running into 
problems with the make step.  My configuration goes okay but when I run
the make command it always stalls.  About 10 to 15 seconds after the
make command begins to execute it stalls and the shell
stops strolling down.  An error message doesn't even come up, I have to
press Ctrl-c to exit the command.  

Any suggestions to what could be wrong?
