I've just been reading through the 802.3 MAC spec. I looks like the MAC functionality is not too bad. One thing I'm not sure how to handle is the PHY itself. I don't think that I have or can afford the capabilty to mount a BGA which leaves the PQFP packages. The only one I've found that actually lets you download technical information is the National Semi DP83865. Unfourtunately, they reccomend a 6 layer PCB. It looks rather difficult to make it work with 4 layers.

Questions:

What other non-BGA GigE PHYs are out there with free (non-NDA) documentation?
Any 100Mb PHYs out there that I can experiement with in the meantime?
What 100Mb or 1000Mb cards have access to the MII or GMII interface, so that I can tap it?
