Hmm, should work.  I generally use KDE, but have used Gnome in the
past.  Though alsamixer takes some getting used to, I have found that
it is the *only* mixer that satisfactorily handles non-vanilla sound
cards (> 2 channels).  On my laptop (AC97 codec) kmix works fine.
