Then their documentation hasn't caught up and documents behaviors that 
their system
doesn't support!

for deltaX ...
'Returns the change in x for a scroll wheel, mouse move, or mouse drag 
event.'

for eventNumber ...
'Returns the counter value of the latest mouse or tracking-rectangle 
event'

Can't both be true if they are sharing the same ivar.
