GNUstep apps can't initialise backend

Okay, I compiled the following versions of GNUstep: -make-1.2.1, -objc-1.2.0, 
-base-1.1.0, -gui-0.7.5, -xdps-0.7.5, -examples-0.9.2.  However, apps refuse 
to startup.  For instance:

This is a Red Hat 7.2 system.  This is using the defailt compiler (gcc 
version 2.96 20000731); I've also tried compiling everything with egcs 
(egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)), with the same result

Any ideas?
