more or less yes, cosmetics (or structure, depending on how you look at it) 
and misleading error messages. The question about  general compiling was 
really just a related note, to the question about the 'strings' target. Alex 
has since let me know, that make isn't responsible for that, but 
'make_strings' is. So its all more or less cleared up. Thanks for your help.
