Building object files in separate directories

Hello all,
in ProjectBuilder(WO).app one can specify a "Build in:" directory. This is pretty useful if you keep your source on an NFS server or for backup purposes. How can I specify such a build dir on GNUstep with the GUstel make package? Is this possible at all?
