I'm still using Jewel, my modest hack of sapphire/aewm++, so C++. It
sucks, but mostly behaves with GNUstep in click-focus mode. There's some
flakiness when moving focus (the menu appears and then the top window
loses focus) but I think that's my fault and I think I know how to fix it.
I just don't have time right now.
Don't be too critical of GNUstep. Jewel crashes ugly on some GTK
applications. Compared with that, Jewel and GNUstep work well together ;-)
I planned to collaborate with Brett Parker on porting Jewel to objC,
but RealLife has intervened (see below, amongst others). I don't think
wmaker is fixable, short of a similar port to objC.
wmaker on another box does odd things with hidden applications. Under Jewel,
I double-click appicon to make it unhide. Under wmaker, I play tunes with
the mouse buttons until it unhides...
