Yes, but you need to switch it on yourself:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain GSFontAntiAlias YES

(Don't forget to switch your font names in the defaults to existing ones as well)

Why is it not permantly switched on?
Because I just don't like it. :-)

Well, Art also provides full AA for the drawing, which afaik is not possible with back-xlib. I didn't noticed that Art was slower than back-xlib (it was more the reverse), but it's been
a while since I used back-xlib.
The most interesting option though would be a good cairo backend.
