solaris consideration and horror stories

Hello all

I read here several messages which point out that Solaris is currently in a "terrible" state with random crashes, unusable applications...

FOr the sake of testing I updated gnustep to CVS again and recompiled make, base, gui and back after reconfiguring each one.

I run on sunos 5.6, use gcc 3.4, sparc v8 (SMP) and Xlib. SSL is disabled (it is not found in /usr/local and I didn't want to tweak things). No options given to any configure.

Apart from an immense number for warning and the fact that -base build is proken for concurrent (make -j 2) building again... everything seems fine.

I launched some apps I have and I recompiled TextEdit, ProjectCenter... to test.

I could not find any trouble in TextEdit (apart from the generic font problems that arise with Xlib in the font panel, but those happen to me on every platform, including linux/x86 so it is a common bug). No problems.

ProjectCenter compiles, I can launch it and open a project (like rpn calc or price). I gets converted, as soon as I click on the main window the application crashes.

Other applications like Preferences.app show no problems.

I did not test Terminal.app.. Or better the version I have compiled still works 99%, but I did not recompile or update to CVS. I guess nobody was able to clean up and finalize my PTY replacement effort for solaris (and possibly other platforms)

-Riccardo
