I tested this on MacOS-X ... it reports hung applications in the
launchedApplications list ... so I reverted the code to match the
MacOS-X behavior.


Indeed. Checking the behaviour of the Dock and the "Force Quit" Application panel of mac it reports "Application not responding". So the dock reports it as running but hung. Consistent with your description.
