the autodetection is not working, but if you choose what you need,
then that should work. At least for me I use sending via SSL, and authentication
mechanism PLAIN, and that works fine there.
I use GNUMail version from SVN.
I still want to look into that autodetection thingie, but its just that
I did not yet got around to it too.
