Ok... I'm willing to do this as pro-bono consulting work of my
company for the FSF. With other words, in return for the work
that I'd do on this, I'd like to have the right to say that
"CISTO has set up, as pro-bono consulting work, the searchable
archives of the mailing lists of the GNU project on gnu.org"
(The next sentence would go on to say that a similar service is
available to other orgs for a fee.)

As a consulting customer, if the FSF will agree to the deal :-),
the FSF gets the right to specify the requirements of the
archiver system, and my company will do everything that is
necessary to meet these requirements, in the areas of installing
Free Software, and as necessary modifying this Free Software to
meet the customer's needs. All modifications and new code
generated under this agreement will be offered to the maintainer
of GNU Mailman for possible inclusion in the official Mailman
version.

What I'm currently using on my servers is
- the ht://Dig search engine, which is GPL'd Free Software
- the version of Pipermail that is distributed with GNU Mailman
(yes, it's GPL'd Free Software), modified with a patch from
Rich Barrett to integrate it with ht://Dig, and some minor
  changes from me.

That patch is publicly available from the Mailman patch manager
on Sourceforge, but IIRC it doesn't come with any explicit
statement putting it under GPL.

Before installing this on an FSF machine I think we should
clarify this situation; I've written to Rich in this matter.

Greetings, Norbert.
