By the way, just for the record:
I have a working script running, but to do the same thing as you did i
had to turn off the shell's globbing:
==snip==
#disable filename globbing
set -f
#build up the list of files/directories to exclude
if [ -z $EXCLUDECMD ]; then
EXCLUDECMD=""
fi
for dir in $EXCLUDEDIRS; do
EXCLUDECMD="${EXCLUDECMD} --exclude $dir/**"
done
duplicity incremental ...
#re-enable filename globbing
set +f
