One thing he said to me was that he had added support of some kind
for using M-x compile.  Do you see that?

    Most of the menu entries seem to actually be `documentation,' where each
    menu entry label contains a short summary of a function or variable's
    usage, and selecting it inserts the summary as a sort of `template'.

There are other modes that have template insertion features.
I don't remember what interface they use--it has been too many years.
But it strikes me that it may be a good idea to use the same interface
for awk mode.
