Sorry... just open a perl file (.pl) and run M-x perl-mode.
That did it for me. Actually the mapping was in auto-mode-alist and I noticed
it wasn't font-locked and realized that this was a problem. It does it on all
files too. Anytime you go into perl-mode. cperl-mode doesn't seem to have
this problem because it correctly defvar's cperl-mode-abbrev-table.
